PlantIn experts from the AI plant care app surveyed “1,140 American PlantIn users about their routines and how those routines make them feel” to learn just how much caring for plants helps aid in stress reduction, and here is what they found:
People felt most calm watering their plants and working with soil
PlantIn experts stated that the survey showed watering and soil work were among the top calming rituals. In addition, about 71% of women and 69% of men say they feel calmer when working with soil. However, women lean more strongly into the feeling with 32% stating they strongly agree, compared to 25% of men.
Watering plants is chosen as the most enjoyable task
35% of women and 39% of men chose “watering” as their favorite gardening task. When they were asked why this simple task ranked highest, they provided a wide range of answers including: the sound of the pour, the way soil darkens, the leaf that wasn’t there yesterday, etc.
Women also said that repotting (19%) and propagation (16%) come to mind when picking their preferred gardening tasks. However, men leaned slightly more toward fertilizing (10%). PlantIn experts state, “The heart of the pleasure sits beyond any single task – it’s the rhythm of care and the quiet reward of seeing life move.
How gardening helps lower stress levels
PlantIn experts report that 80% of women and 75% of men say tending to plants makes them more present in the moment. “The gender curves differ slightly, but the story is the same on both sides: small, tactile rituals help the mind settle.”
“After routine care, nearly 78% of women and 72% of men report a drop in stress. The tasks are small – water, soil, a closer look – but the physiology is familiar: hands move, breath evens out, thoughts unclench.”
