Scarlet Runner Bean

Sears says that the Scarlet Runner Bean is a standout climbing vine that quickly reaches 6–9 feet tall, features vibrant red blooms, and has a vigorous growth habit. The fast-growing vines easily cover trellises or railings, adding vertical interest to patios and small-space gardens.

“This is an extra-fun flower to grow as the nectar-rich scarlet flowers attract hummingbirds. In addition to its ornamental appeal and pollinator benefits, it produces edible pods best harvested young and tender, making it both beautiful and functional,” she says.

2. Cardinal Climber Vine

If you want to attract hummingbirds and butterflies to your yard, Sears suggests growing a Cardinal Climber Vine. She states that it is a versatile, easy-to-grow vine that can climb 10–15 feet tall, bringing vibrant color and texture to gardens, trellises, and fences.

“Its finely cut, feathery foliage pairs beautifully with its bright red, star-shaped blooms, creating a soft yet striking look. It’s especially attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies, making it a lively addition to any outdoor space.”

3. Cypress Vine

Another pollinator favorite that Sears recommends adding to your garden is the Cypress Vine. “It is a delicate, fast-growing climber that can reach 10-15 feet tall, with soft, fern-like foliage and small, star-shaped blooms in shades of red, rose, and white,” she describes.

“Its airy texture adds contrast to denser plantings, while its twining habit makes it ideal for containers and vertical supports.”

4. Evening Glory

If you’ve dreamt of growing a moon garden, then this majestic climbing flower is a must-have. Sears says the Evening Glory, also known as moonflower, is a fast-growing vine that can grow 12–18 feet tall and produces large, fragrant white blooms that unfurl in the evening.

“The flowers – often over four inches wide – create a soft glow in low light and release a sweet scent perfect for patios or porches.”

Morning Glory

Morning glories are the perfect playful addition to your patio space or garden. Sears says the Grandpa Ott Morning Glory is a classic, heirloom morning glory that climbs to 10–12 feet tall. It is prized for its deep purple blooms that features a striking red star at the center.

“Its lush, heart-shaped foliage creates the perfect backdrop for its trumpet-shaped flowers. Blooms open in the morning and continue through summer until the first frost, offering reliable, season-long color,” she adds.

6. Thunbergia Black-Eyed Susan

“The Thunbergia Black Eyed Susan is a cheerful, fast-growing vine that grows 6–8 feet tall, producing bright blooms in shades of orange, yellow, buff, and white — each with a distinctive dark center,” says Sears.

This beautiful flower makes the list because it can easily climb trellises and spill beautifully from containers and hanging baskets, making it a versatile option for small spaces. She states that it blooms from late spring through summer and also attracts butterflies, adding a lively pop of color.
