Gardening is good for the soul. It calms the mind, gets the body moving, and creates something new, beautiful, and maybe even edible. So, what happens when you’ve waited all week to get your hands in the dirt, but it ends up raining?
Move it inside, of course! Here are some fun and creative indoor gardening projects to either keep inside or move outside when the sun comes back.
5 Fun Gardening Projects to Do on a Rainy Day
Whether you have always wanted to have a tasty herb garden at your fingertips or grow your own vegetables, this list will help get your creative juices flowing for ideas on how to use your green thumb. Check out these fun gardening projects that can be done rain or shine!
Create an Herb Garden
Herbs are excellent little plants to keep inside on a windowsill where they will get plenty of light. It’s best to start most of them from seeds. The easiest ones to grow include rosemary, mint, basil, and oregano. If you’re not sure which ones to plant, think about what you cook with the most and plant those.
Another fun idea is to plant a themed herb garden. A pizza garden could include basil, oregano, tomatoes, bell peppers, onion, and garlic. A tea garden could include peppermint, chamomile, lemon balm, and elderberry. Check out Ferry-Morse’s Tea Herb Seed Variety Pack to start your very own tea garden indoors or outdoors!
2. Plant a Succulent Garden
Succulents are pretty, low-maintenance, and last forever if properly cared for. These plants need very well-draining soil. Placing rocks at the bottom of the pot will help let the water filter out.
Succulents come in all different sizes, so you can be as creative as you like with your arrangement. Plant succulents in a regular pot or a glass bowl. Just be sure your container is able to be drained easily.

3. Paint Pots
Here’s a fun gardening project to do when you’re feeling creative. If you have kids, this is a great one to include them in too. Gather up some plain flower pots. They can be big, small, ceramic, plastic, terracotta, or white.
From a simple polka-dot pattern to abstract swirls, you can customize your plant pots to match your mood or your room. Use acrylic paints; they won’t come off when you water the plants. For extra protection, you can use a primer and/or sealant.
4. Build a Terrarium
A terrarium is a self-sustaining miniature ecosystem. With a clear glass or plastic container, you can create a tiny greenhouse to keep inside. Terrariums work best with smaller plants that have a low and dense growing pattern.
You can make a tropical one, a desert one, or a forest/woodland one. Whatever you choose, make sure the plants have the same requirements. You can’t place a cactus that needs almost no water with a humidity-loving tropical plant.
5. Grow Veggies from Scraps and Seeds
Propogating veggies from kitchen scraps will not only save you money, but it’s also a great way to grow plants. Whether it’s an avocado pit, a tomato seed, a romaine lettuce root, or a basil leaf, it doesn’t take a lot of work to make your own indoor garden. It may take some time though; it may take up to 100 days to see your first tomato.
