Ah, there is just something special about a beautiful garden. Growing up, my mom always had our lawn flourishing with gorgeous flowers, plants, and trees. And now I'm finding my mind wandering with all of these whimsical possibilities for our new home.

So I thought I'd share some fun themed garden ideas for anyone needing some inspiration with their landscaping too!

5 Fun Themed Garden Ideas

I'm a kid at heart, so a few of these themed garden ideas are inspired by some of my favorite movies. So, open up your imagination and check out these non-traditional garden themes!

  1. Alice in Wonderland Garden Theme

I always wanted an Alice in Wonderland themed garden. There is a rabbit hole of endless possibilities with this one! Check out the following ideas to get your creative juices flowing!

Alice in Wonderland Themed Garden Ideas

To start your Alice in Wonderland garden theme, you could set up an adorable table and chairs for your evening tea time for all of those "unbirthday" celebrations. This Rose Bistro Tableset would be perfect for your garden theme.

You can have tea time with your sweet feathered friends and make cute birdfeeders and houses out of teacups and teapots! (Check yard sales and the thrift shops to get garden décor on a budget!)

Enjoy your garden at night by adding some mood lighting with these charming mushroom solar lights.

An Alice in Wonderland garden wouldn't be complete without signs telling you where to go! And don't forget a sign to remind visitors to not step on the Mome Raths!

Another super fun idea is to add a place to play croquet! Just don't get as competitive as the queen of hearts while you play.

I thought it would be really cool to customize the croquet set by making the mallets look like flamingos like in the movie. Or you could find some already made on Etsy.

Flowers and Plants for your Alice in Wonderland Garden

If you would like to have some of the original flowers featured in your garden, you have quite the selection to choose from. Roses, daisies, irises, lilies of the valley, sunflowers, and more are shown in the infamous film. Check out this post for a complete list of the flowers that were in the 1951 movie.

If you love roses, then try mixing white and red roses for an authentic Queen of Hearts Garden.

Of course, you will need to be sure you plant your flowers according to their sun exposure and water needs. I think adding a mushroom garden would be fun too!

2. Wizard of Oz Garden Theme

There's no place like a Wizard of Oz themed garden! This idea is inspired by the actual Land of OZ theme park in Boone, North Carolina. If you haven't been there, it's a must-see for the Wizard of Oz lover. Here are a few fun ideas to help you transform your yard into an Oz Paradise!

Wizard of Oz Themed Garden Ideas

Walking the yellow brick road in the Land of Oz made me want one of my very own. This idea may take a bit of work, but how magical would it be to have an actual yellow brick road throughout your garden!

Remember, you have to get actual masonry brick paint to paint your bricks yellow.

You need to have all of your favorite characters adorning your whimsical garden as well! Personally, I'm like Dorothy, so my favorite character is, of course, the scarecrow. ;) If you love the scarecrow too, try to make your very own with the help of this tutorial by Made By Barb!

After you finish up your scarecrow, you can also make a cute tin man. Check out this video tutorial on YouTube by The Junking Datagirl to learn how.

If you're into Gnomes, then this Wizard of Oz Gnome collection will be right up your alley. You might want to add this hilarious "Don't make me drop a house on you" stepping stone for your walkway too.

This gorgeous "Emerald City" made out of green glass and vases is one of my favorite Wizard of Oz themed garden ideas! Check yard sales, thrift shops, and auctions for green glassware and the dollar tree for colored pebbles for your path!

Flowers and Plants for Your Wizard of Oz Garden

The movie has so many enchanting flowers and plants that can help inspire your garden theme. I always thought it would be so beautiful to have a red poppy garden like the field of red poppies in the film. They are such pretty and happy-looking flowers.

Other flowers that would make your garden dazzling are gladiolaspansieslupine russelstulips, and wildflowers

If you have a shed you'd like to dress up with some pretty plants, why not make it fun and put a couple of ferns there and add these witch's legs with the glittering ruby slippers to it.

Having a Wizard of Oz themed garden would def be a dream come true!

3. Beauty and the Beast Garden Theme

Have you ever imagined having an elegant garden inspired by the beloved movie Beauty and The Beast? Oh, the possibilities! Here are some creative ways to start your own Beauty and the Beast themed garden!

Beauty and the Beast Themed Garden Ideas

You will not believe all of the unique and fun ways you can dress up your Beauty and the Beast garden. Remember the sweet and adored dresser known as "Wardrobe"? Well, you can turn an old dresser into a planter— How cool is that!

Search sites such as Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist for people giving away or selling old dressers cheap. Remember, it's going to be outside anyway.

You can also find cheap dressers at thrift shops and auctions. Once you get it prepped and painted, plant some of your favorite flowers in the drawers.

Who didn't love Lumière? That was one smooth-talking candlestick. LOL Well, technically, he is a "Candelabra." Anyway, instead of candles, you could use votive cups or glue small candy dishes to it and make it into a bird feeder. It is an elegant touch for your garden, and you get to watch beautiful birds enjoy it.

Be sure to add Mrs. Potts to your garden décor too! A shimmering teapot is a perfect planter for succulents.

Learn how to make a succulent teapot planter with this easy tutorial by Succulent Studios. Succulents can even grow in teacups! So, find a whole tea set that you can use for your garden display.

Flowers and Plants for Your Beauty and the Beast Garden

Since Beauty and the Beast took place in France, why not use French flowers in your garden. Use this list of French flowers for ideas and inspiration. It features flowers such as Sweet Irises, French Peonies, French Lilac, French Hyacinth, French daffodils, and more!

You can also add an enchanting rose garden because, after all, the whole movie is about an enchanted rose. Use them as edging along a pathway or dedicate an entire area for them.

Add greenery plants such as boxwood hedges and decorative trees for a true French Garden look.

Everyone will want to be a guest to your new ravishing Beauty and the Beast Themed Garden!

4. Fairy Garden Theme

The great thing about Fairy Gardens is they can be as small or as big as you want them to be. So, whether you want to transform your entire backyard or simply create a nook garden, this is one of the best themed garden ideas that will help you do it!

Fairy Themed Garden Ideas

A must-have in your Fairy Garden is a Fairy House. I love this DIY Fairy House made out of logs on Pinterest. You can make your fairy house the focal point of your garden if you like. Make a pathway throughout your garden with stepping stones and pebbles, or you can even use mulch.

Fountains are another fabulous addition to your Fairy Garden decor. Check out this mythical Fairy Castle Statue Water Fountain on Amazon.

Again, make sure you check all the sites like Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, and Craigslist for cheaper alternatives. You can also grab one that isn't working and create a miniature Fairy Garden in it with soil, moss, and decor.

The next thing you should do is fill your garden with feeders and waterers for your woodland friends. Create a beautiful space to birdwatch with this Fairy Garden Birdbath. (This is on my garden wishlist.) I also plan on making a budget-friendly squirrel feeder out of a slinky like this one!

Last but certainly not least, add a touch of sparkle to your garden with glittering fairy lights. This way, you can enjoy your garden day and night.

Flowers and Plants for Your Fairy Garden

When planning out your plants and flowers for your Fairy Garden, try to imagine an enchanted forest for inspiration. You can add a variety of mosses to your garden beds for a forestry feel.

For more greenery and gorgeous blooms, add different types of vine flowers such as morning glories or black-eyed Susan vines. These beautiful vines are quite resilient and can grow up trellises or even old cast iron benches and chairs.

Celosias, impatiens, petunias, and succulents are other flowers and plants that will breathe life into your Fairy Garden. Check out this 15 Best Fairy Garden Plants post for more ideas!

5. Desert Oasis Garden Theme

If you live in a dryer climate or don't feel like mowing the grass, then a desert oasis themed garden is a fantastic option for you. There is beauty in every type of garden, and you can get pretty creative with this garden theme too!

Desert Oasis Themed Garden Ideas

Setting up your Desert Oasis starts with landscaping your garden with sand and rocks. You can use different types of river rocks, pebbles, and garden sand for your landscape design.

For your refreshing oasis, you can use a plastic pond in the center of your garden (or wherever you think it looks best.) They come in all different shapes and sizes. They are available at stores such as Lowes, but you can usually find them on Craigslist and other sites as well.

To give your garden a true southwest desert feel, adorn it with various terracotta pots and watering jars. Don't forget to set up an area to rest from the scorching sun with these portable Tamarack Wood Folding Chairs.

You can also utilize all that sun exposure and add some cute solar cactus lights for a fun nighttime display.

Flowers and Plants for Your Desert Oasis Garden

Now that you set the scene for your desert garden it's time to plant! Did you know there are 2,500 types of cactus? WHOA! Not only do you have an amazing selection to choose from, but they are also hearty and resilient plants which is good for those of us that are still working on our green thumbs.

To start, you can add a couple of hanging cactus plants to spice up your garden decor. Despite its name, the Rat Tail Cactus is quite beautiful! It features beautiful blooms and grows downwards from the basket as pictured.

Along with the traditional-looking cactus, you can add a few prickly pairs, beavertail cactus, and peanut cactus. Check out the 10 Best Types of Cactus To Grow Outdoors for more ideas.

Some of my favorite plants are succulents! And they are a fun addition to any Desert Oasis Themed Garden. Just like cacti, there are many different types to choose from.

You can easily grow them in your terracotta pots around your garden. Another fun idea to try is this DIY Succulent Turtle.

Add lush ferns and pond plants to your pond oasis, such as water lilies. Full sun ferns are best if there is no shade over the pond. Lotus flowers and cardinal flowers are fabulous flowers to adorn your pond with too.

You'll be looking forward to some much-needed R&R in your new dazzling Desert Oasis Themed Garden!
