Whether you have just moved into your new house or have been in yours for years, you need to be sure to make your house a home. Your home is your sanctuary and should be where you are happiest!

Many of us are guilty of being overwhelmed by too much stuff or have more unfinished home projects than we care to admit, despite our good intentions to finish them.

The great news is that there are simple things you can do to start making your house a home! But first, let’s discuss why you should try to make your new or current house into a home that makes you happy.

Why You Should Make Your House A Home

Making your house a home is actually good for your overall wellbeing! In fact, a study by the GoodHome report found that 73% of people are happier with their life if they are happy with their homes! That in itself shows the importance of why you should take the time to make your house a home.

Your home should be where you feel most at ease. It should be a place where you express yourself, surround yourself with items you love, and have space to do things you enjoy.

After all, you spend quite a bit of time there. As the study shows, this will make you happier in life overall.

The first step in making your house a home is to declutter and tidy it up. Being surrounded by tons of mess will make you uneasy and you will never feel happy in your home.

Surrounding yourself with only things that, in Marie Kondo’s words, “Spark Joy,” is the key to a happy home. There are many other benefits of being organized and having a tidy home as well.

So, check out my “Decluttering Questions” post and try to find a decluttering method that works for you, and start creating a functional and relaxing living space.

    2. Create Picture Collages of Those You Love

Pictures are some of my favorite things. Come to find out, pictures trigger buried memories faster than words. A huge part of making your house a home is surrounding yourself with pictures of the ones you love-FURBABIES INCLUDED and places that make you feel joyful!

I’m dying to try some of these adorable picture collage ideas I found on Pinterest. Check them out for inspiration to create a collage you love!

    3. Personalize Your House with Your Favorite Decor

One of the best things about having your own place is decorating in a style you love! Do you love boho decor? Tropical feels? Or perhaps something a bit cozier? The world is your oyster when it comes to decorating.

You can also decorate on a budget by finding items on sites such as Amazon, Facebook Marketplace, or stores like the Dollar General. Decorating is a simple and easy way to make your house a home!

    4. Add Flowers and Plants to Make Your House a Home

Not only are flowers and plants beautiful, they actually have many health benefits! Houseplants can improve air quality, lower stress levels, boost mood, and more.

As if we needed another reason to love plants. So, head out to your local greenhouse and pick out some plants to bring the outdoors in! If you don’t have much of a “green thumb,” then check out these houseplants that are near-impossible to kill!

    5. Create Warmth with Candles

Candles are perfect for making a house a home and practicing Hygge too. They create an ambiance and make any room cozy and warm. Personally, I like to have candles to burn and also candles that are just for decoration.

You can add them to your bathroom for a bit of aromatherapy while you take a relaxing bath or at your workspace to create a sense of calm while you work. Check out the Simplicity and Sunshine Shop for an adorable selection of candles!

    6. Let the light in

Natural light has many benefits too! It gives your home a natural glow, and it’s good for you and your indoor plants. As the sun comes up, be sure to open those blinds and let the light in. It can also save you money by not using so much electricity for lighting!

    7. Decorate Your Porches

Making your house a home starts before you even walk in the door. Creating a cute porch display is a fantastic way to make you smile as you get home every day.

It’s super fun to change up your decor for every season if you’re up for it too. Fall is one of the most fun seasons to partake in a gorgeous autumn display.

Whether you want to switch it up each season or stay with a traditional all-year-round display, check out this post by HGTV for inspiration!

    8. Make a Front or Backyard Oasis

Having a yard is absolutely amazing because you can create your own little piece of paradise with it. There are so many different types of gardens too!

For instance, you could create a beautiful English Cottage Garden, a Zen Garden, or whatever puts you at peace. Beautifying your yard is another way you can make your house a home.

If you don’t have much gardening experience, don’t fret! Pinterest is also a fantastic source for gardening ideas, tips, and tricks. Plus, gardening is therapeutic!
